This week, I’ve been reading When You Were Mine. It’s a modern YA version of Romeo & Juliet told from Rosaline’s point of view, the girl Romeo was pining over until he caught sight of Juliet at a party. I absolutely love the idea of this book, because I always thought Romeo was a fickle idiot. So, you know, a realistic fifteen-year-old boy.
When You Were Mine makes me think of this song I found through the website youmeandcharlie.com (if you don’t know it, check it out—it’s full of inspiring, fun stuff). This girl has such a sweet voice, and the lyrics are spot on for this book:
I also may or may not have had to watch Letters to Juliet to round out the whole Romeo and Juliet experience. And now I really want to go to Italy.
Do you like Romeo & Juliet? Do you see it as a love story or as a tragedy?

Oh this does sound fun.
ReplyDeleteAnd I've been pining over Italy for years.
And I sooo need to see Letters to Juliet too.
I do hope you review this :)
Oh regarding Romeo, I liked him and Juliet. Of course I could have done without the lack of communication leading to suicide thing. ;)
ReplyDeleteKind of a tragedy about how melodramatic kids can be. Jeez, you guys, you've known each other for like four days and you're willing to die for one another, really?
ReplyDeleteIn my mind it's equal parts romance and tragedy. Shakespeare was my minor in college and I LOVED the analysis side. . . Romeo and Juliet was one of my favorites to deconstruct.
ReplyDeleteHa! I love how you experience a book from all artistic angles! lol. When I was 16, I found romeo and juliette totally romantic. Now that I'm an adult, I see them as just a couple of naive and horny teenagers making bad decisions and paying the price.
ReplyDeleteHaha! Yes, such a regular 15 year old boy. What a great idea for a POV shift.
ReplyDeleteOh I've not heard of the book from Rosalie's POv, sounds good. I guess R&J is both a romance and a tragedy for me. Yes, both behaving like teenagers.
ReplyDeleteI actually brought this the other week, it's on my to be read pile! It sounds so fun. Romeo and Juliet was tragic because it could have been so easily avoided. Stupid fuding families.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy the book. I may just have to move up my TBR pile lol.
I do like R&J and I think it's a tragedy. I've been reading some good things about When You Were Mine so I'll definitely add it to my TBR list :)
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a good book. I do like Romeo and Juliet even though it is a tragedy. But I feel like it's been a while since I've seen a really great performance of this.
ReplyDeleteThis books sounds super interesting. You will have to tell me what you think. I agree Romeo is an idiot!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to read the book!!!! Is it good???? :D
ReplyDeleteI love the concept of this book! Ha! What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI do think R & J is a tragedy...though I guess you could argue, what was their tragic flaw? Miscommunication?
ReplyDeleteEither way, I've always been glad that old Will at least let them have a wedding night together...that proves to me he was a softy at heart:)
I most definitely see it as a tragedy, but I still love it!
ReplyDeleteThat take on it sounds amazing!!!!
ReplyDeleteUm I just happen to watch that movie every time it's on HBO (Me and hubz went to Verona and saw Juliet's balcony)!
