So, I Went to an Art Gallery

This week, I challenged myself to go to an art gallery, something I haven’t done since I lived in New York three years ago. Saturday evening, I went to an art opening reception in east Houston. Four artists were showing their modern art: two painters/drawers, one who created a dark room with videos of circles expanding and retracting like mouths breathing, and one performance artist. The performance artist was asleep in a child’s bed in the middle of the room, and he had a webcam trained on him and had set up chatroulette, which visitors played on his behalf. It was…strange. But hilarious.

The crowd was young and fun, full of artsy types that I rarely see in Houston (unless you count hipsters, which I never do). I’m definitely planning on going to more of these receptions. It’s an entertaining, free way to meet creative people and feel more culturally enlightened, if nothing else.

And if anyone in Houston is interested in seeing some very interesting modern art, CLICK HERE to see the details of the exhibition.

How was your weekend?

  1. I love your new blogging style, all your challenges sound great! The art show sounds a lot of fun, although the bed thing sounds bizarre I would definitely have got the giggles watching that.

We went to see The Tiger Who Came to Tea at the theatre, it was fantastic! My son was mesmerized, although he did ask me to "play it again" after a funny bit :D

  3. What a fun experience!! I would love to broaden my social experiences and dive into the art scene. I've always wanted to try one of the receptions here in Houston! I just never knew anyone to go with! Now I do ;)

  4. That sounds awesome! My weekend was filled with revisions and slightly less brain-stimulating activities: my husband and I decided to try one of the restaurants we'd seen on Diners, Drive-ins & Dives, and I'm still swooning over how delicious the food was :)

  6. Yay! You did it! Here's to art galleries. I LOVE them. And it sounds like you picked a good time to go. The dark room w/the circles sounds crazy, but not as much as the performance art, which is always a hoot! Here's to art~ :o) <3

  7. Wow, that does sound *interesting*. :) I have never attended anything like that. I'm afraid I am very culturally deprived! It sounds fun, though! :)

  8. Hurrah! Go you! Always good to get out and try something new or something we've not done in a while. I love, love, LOVE galleries and performances like that. My brother is an artist and its always funny listening to him and his friends - and their interpretation of the world. Have a fab week! ;-)

  9. Sounds like you had a blast! I graduated in Art and miss the days of being able to visit galleries and museums now that I live in the sticks. But I love hearing about them from other people at least.

  11. My weekend was great! But I really want to go to an art show. My sister's best friend is an artist, but I'm never in town when her shows go up. SOMEDAY though... :)

  12. Yep, you're still inspiring me. I'm in the middle of a job hunt, which for some reason makes me feel like I can't do ANYTHING until I get that taken care of. But THEN I want to go to stuff like this around Utah :)

  16. I'm glad you went and had fun, Meredith! Meeting young, arty types at a free event is definitely the way to have a good weekend. Then again, so is having lunch with an awesome friend you haven't seen in a couple months and buying clothes and make-up like a total girl :D
