This challenge is kind of cheating, because I’ve already made plans to go to an Astros’ game this week with my book club. We read The Art of Fielding by Chad Harbach (which I loved and devoured in a matter of days), so baseball had to be included somehow.
I haven’t been to a pro game in a while. I grew up going to my brother’s baseball games (where I would, without fail, be either climbing the back of the bleachers or reading a book, and I never knew which team had won). So I got over baseball pretty quickly.
Still, it’s a fun excuse to eat terribly wonderful food and chat with friends and trash talk umpires, which I just can’t pass up. I think I’ll have an awesome time.
Do you like baseball? Anybody else bring a book along to sporting events, just in case?

I love going to baseball games but they don't do that in Europe. :(
ReplyDeleteI live just a few blocks from Wrigley Field so we go to games more than I'd like honestly LOL:) But it is fun. Actually, it's fun because it's such an american pasttime. You've got to supplement though with a movie like A League of Their Own or The Sandlot. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think I've read at a sporting event, mainly because I haven't been to that many, but I do distinctly remember ignoring a barbeque for my mum's work while reading Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. Good times.
ReplyDeleteBaseball bores me. But I like the sun and hotdogs. Have a great time! I'm curious about your thoughts on The Art of Fielding. It's on my list to read but not high up there for some reason.
ReplyDeleteThe only professional baseball game I've ever been to was in Minnesota and it was against the Toronto Blue Jays. I remember being so preoccupied with how steep the stairs were and how high up we were that I had a hard time enjoying the first part of the game (I'm seriously afraid of heights). Overall, it was a pretty fun experience, and you really can't beat ballpark hot dogs (if you eat meat, or what passes for it anyway). :)
ReplyDeleteI'm more of a basketball fan. Baseball just seems so boring to me. My husband loves to go to live baseball games. I usually stay home, mostly because I don't like sitting out in the cold or the rain... which is often in Seattle. Ha!
ReplyDeleteI went to the baseball twice when we lived in DC and I loved it - even though I had no idea what was going on. It was just such a lovely, family friendly atmosphere and I loved all the fireworks and mascots and things.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy!
Wow, hate to see what you would do in your book club if you read The Hunger Games. lol :D
ReplyDeleteDon't hate me, but I don't get baseball! I'm more a football fan.
ReplyDeleteI'm not really a fan but I've been wanting to check out a ball game recently. I think I'm craving the experience. It's SO All American. Enjoy! :)
ReplyDeleteHa ha! No, I've never brought a book to a sporting event. Usually I'm way too distracted by the electric atmosphere. And even if I'm not paying attention to the game (which is pretty typical), I'm chatting with someone. I'm afraid it's much more a social experience for me than an I-Love-Sports experience. Hope you have a great time!
ReplyDeleteThis is on our summer to-do list too! And I heard great things about that book!
ReplyDeleteI am so sports illiterate, but it sounds fun!
ReplyDeleteI am so loving these challenges, Meredith! Have to admit I'm not a sports/baseball fan, but it sounds cool trying all these things :-)
ReplyDeleteI'm a huge baseball fan. I've loved watching it since I was a kid (I'd go to my brother's games too). I've never brought along a book, mostly because I worry I'll get caught up in the story and not notice when a foul ball heads my way...that would be bad!
