Autumn Writing

As summer shifts into fall, my story ideas change. I stop thinking about books set at the beach or on some European summer adventure, and instead start thinking of back-to-school plots or (if I’m in a Halloween mood) maybe something a little bit spooky.

Fall is my favorite season, by far. There’s just something about the crisp cool in the air, the smell of spices and warmth emanating from the houses. Everything seems more comforting. I know as soon as the heat breaks here, I’m going to be thinking of new stories set against the backdrop of glowing leaves with hints of cinnamon and smoky fires.

What about you? Does the season affect your writing?

Quick note: I’m changing my blogging schedule from M-W-F to M-W for the time being. I want to focus some more time on writing (novel idea, I know). But I’ll still be stalking all of you every day of the week!

  1. I love the changing seasons and different influences they have, and it's interesting how much they influence your ideas! That does happen for me too I think, although Spring is my favourite season, and I love Summer, so I do find many of my ideas harking back to summer days and beaches and all of that - and a lot of it is definitely wistful thinking! I am influenced differently though I think. This has made me think about it though, thanks! Sorry for my ramble! :) x

  2. I thought I was the only one like that! The change of seasons certainly influences my writing, probably more than I'd like it to! And while I love summer, fall is probably my favorite.

  3. I'm a major Fall girl myself. It's always been my favourite season and for many of the same reasons that you mention. I grew up further east than where I currently live, and the leaves back east turn brilliant shades of red, orange, and gold. So, so beautiful. Out west it's more gold which is beautiful in its own right. I think it's just about time to start baking pumpkin-y things and that makes me smile. :)

  7. Autumn is my favourite season, I love the weather and the way the world changes around us. It definitely influences my writing to, in different ways though. Sometimes it will make me wish for the sun, so I will write that summer adventure story, and other times I will go with the season and write Autumn themed, or indeed Halloween spooky stories.
Good luck with your writing :)

  8. Fall is my favorite time to write as well. Mostly because it rains a lot where I live during the fall. What better to do on a rainy day than write (or read)?

  9. I love fall because of all the school supplies. :) And the holidays, and the leaves and cool weather and...I just love everything about it. I don't think it's ever affected my writing or ideas, though. Interesting that it does for you!

  10. You probably remember I love fall, too! Definitely my fave season for pretty much the same reasons. I haven't really noticed it effecting my writing mood or inspiration... I'll have to pay more attention and see.

  11. I don't think my writing is year-round enough for it to be affected by the seasons, but I have written all my novels in spring, so I guess I should plan to plan in winter.

  13. I love fall, as well - it's a lovely time to be in London (less rain! usually, anyway). Fall is when I buckle down. I sometimes find it hard co concentrate in the summer!

  14. Fall is my favorite too! I wish we had more of the pretty colors as leaves change here, but I'll accept the cooler weather and my Yankee Harvest candle! The changing seasons definitely inspire me more, and I love curl up and read with a cup of hot chocolate or a pumpkin muffin!

  17. I don't feel the fall chill until October and our leaves don't change.

I do feel like I'm in the mood for something spookier. Also, I'm more likely to burn candles and bring out the hot beverages.

I get less writing time now since I'm back to teaching.

    Happy writing.

  18. Autumn is by far my favorite, too! I'm so excited for Chai Lattes!

I don't know that it really affects my writing though. Except that perhaps I get more writing done because I'm not in that lazy summer mood :)
