Why I Watch the Olympics

I love when the Olympics rolls around. I spend hours away from my computer, watching athletes in obscure events (archery and trampoline were some of my surprise favorites this year). But after the closing ceremonies, when all these people from around the world have shown us what the human body is capable of, I come back to writing more inspired than ever.

I have very little athletic talent (don’t throw anything at me—I promise I can’t catch it). I run, but it’s more of a jog-and-brainstorm-ideas-for-my-WiP sort of thing than a hardcore thing. But seeing these athletes who have trained for years break records and push themselves to the limit makes me want to do that in my own life. I want to write the story that’s out of my comfort zone and make it the best story that it can be and send it out into the world with no regrets.

So for now I’m going to keep watching beach volleyball and track and field and finding the inspiration in all the hard work these people have done.

What are some of your favorite Olympic sports?

  1. I am absolutely inspired by the Olympics, too! My fav is women's gymnastics, then the track and field -- especially the sprinting. It's amazing that those men in the 100 meters can run at 27 mph! Yep, I'm in awe!

  2. I've been meaning to watch more on the computer. I can never get enough in those 4 hours of prime time. I like seeing any of it, but I'll be cliche and say women's gymnastics.

  3. To be honest, I'm not even remotely a sport fan, but I have to admit the Olympics can be amazingly stirring sometimes! Definitely inspiring - so true.

  6. I haven't been watching it, but I catch the news at the end of the day. I find it inspiring. I also read about the athletes, getting to know more behind their drive.

  7. Gymnastics, of course! But you're right. The Olympics are the most inspiring thing on TV. I did not watch trampolines! But considering any time trampoline appears on AFV, I'm rolling on the floor, I'm wishing I'd caught that... :o) <3

  8. I wish my abs looked the ones for the female sprinters. :D

I haven't watched as much as I would like. I've been too busy. The kids and I have caught it here and there. The trampolining and gymnastics events were amazing.

I love how supportive a lot of athletes are to each other, even if they are competing in the same event.

  9. Beach volley ball is the best! It's much more fun to watch than team volley ball. :)

  12. It's so inspiring. I love the swimming, eventing and running best. One of the british girls who won the rowing only took it up 4 years ago - which is so inspiring!
